Our little guy kindergarten experience has been fantastic to date. It is amazing to see how much he changes. I swear sometimes it seems like the boy you pick up in the after school isn't the same boy you dropped off. The word amazing isn't powerful enough to describe the changes day to day and how our little baby is becoming a little boy.

Fantastic.

The picture you see here is of the little guy "mowing" the lawn. No play lawnmowers for him. He knows the difference and he is strong enough to push the real thing.

Yesterday was his first day. However the school bus never arrived and his Mom had to drive him in. Cade had been so excited to ride the bus that when it didn't show up he was extremely disappointed.

Well, this 2nd day of school morning the bus did arrive (hurrrah!). Cade proudly boarded (and I understand Fiona and Shea may have been cheering for him) and he is off on his 2nd day of school!
Yes. Another prolong haitus.

Well, the little guys birthday is coming up so Shawn and I decided it was time for another bicycle. He had a bicycle last year. I really really sweet 20" Haro BMX bike which our fantastic neighbors the O'Rourkes gave us. Sadly it was stolen from our front yard last fall. Sad.

So, we visited a couple of stores until Cade latched on to this sweet beauty.

Don't mess with the Mini Viper

After throughly testing the machine throughout the top floor of Dicks Sporting goods in Bloomington, riding the bike to and into the elevator, riding out and a another lap of Dicks 1st floor; he was convinced. After Mom and Dad paid for the orange beauty he rode it through the front doors, to the car in the parking lot. This now reminds me of his Uncle Pauls first car. Ask him about it, he loves to tell the story. Also ask him about Tang cake.

So here's my point. I'd shared with Cade that I wanted to sometime this summer go for a run and have him join me on his bike. Well it happened, and on the first day he had his new bike. We went to Nokomis talking the WHOLE way there. Once there we swam to cool off and then headed back toward home. We stopped at Adrians for cheeseburgers and cokes. All in all it was an absolutely fantastic day.

And with the cold water at Lake Nokomis my ankle didn't hurt at all on the run home. FANTASTIC.

Cade will be entering kindergarten this year. It feels like a big time for us, as Cade will be beginning school. Which as I've thought about it means lots of changes for us as a family. Vacation schedules, school and afterschool events, (official) homework etc.

Cadesmom and I have been touring schools to try to find the right fit for the uber dude. This week I toured Hale Elementary with a group of parents. I arrived early, so I was there when all the other parents showed. Being my first tour, I had my ears tuned in to hear what the other parents had to say about the schools they've toured etc. Well, this was probably a mistake, as the other parents shared they'd already toured 100 schools and were pretty sure they'd decided. This immediately had my head spinning in the realization that I am a bad parent due to the thought that I'd only thought to tour 3 schools. Ugh. The tour was great, but being around the other parents made me feel like the school we send Cade will make the difference between Harvard and Cell Block A. Its hard to at least hear the hype and get sucked in.

In the last few weeks the hot lingo around the house has been anything "poop". Poopyhead, poopybutt, poopy, poopy, poopy. I'm just sure that if we could go back to ancient greek, Mongols or caveman times and we'd find kids saying poopybutt, poopy head etc.

It never gets old.

Vacation always makes me reflect on my life. Nearly every time I've been away from home (particularly with Shawn) I've ended up making a goals list or rethinking something in my life. This vacation was no different.

We returned last Thursday from a week in Montana. I'll have to be honest and say I was a tad apprehensive about this trip. Shawn and I (and Cade) have always vacationed somewhere warm. But this trip was definitely a cool weather trip. We were headed to Big Sky, MT to ski. Mind you, Shawn and I don't ski. I think between us we'd downhill skied 2-3 times in our life. I've cross country'd plenty, but I never got the hang of downhill and consequently it was never any fun.

We met Jane and Esther at the Airport and together we flew to Billings. From Billings we drove a couple of hours to Big Sky and got settled in. The next day we decided to explore, get our bearings and plan. After checking out the slopes and town we sorted out the plan for the next day. Shawn and I rented Snowshoes at Grizzly Outfitters and hit a trail she had read about in a local magazine. Getting to this trail was crazy. We had to drive down a hill so steep that I was afraid we wouldn't make it back up. It was also covered in packed snow. Crazy. Once we found the trail we hiked in. It was fun, and quite a bit of work. I was huffing and puffing like crazy. It began to get dark and we decided we'd better head back to the truck - - the way back was SO much easier. Turns out we'd hiked up the whole way in. No wonder I was panting like a dog.

That evening Mark and Mike joined us. It was nice to have them as they're both so easy going and fun. It is too bad they weren't able to stay longer but it was great to have them with us, even if for a few days.

The next morning we all headed to Moonlight Basin. First we all trekked to Grizzly Outfitters (we ended up spending a lot of time there) for Skis and lift tickets. We got everybody all set and we were off! We got Esther and Cade signed up for ski school. Mark and Mike spent some time pushing Esther and Cade around on skis which was awesome. They were shortly released and freed to ski as they chose and Jane skied a bit as well. We pushed them around the Madison Base area where they had a magic carpet so the kids could ride up a small pseudo slope and come right back down. We had a couple hours until ski school started so we pushed them around, ate lunch etc. I think school began at 1(?). Once it was time to start, Cade had decided he'd had enough. Esther was a super trooper; she continued on to class and got a sticker for turning! Cade and I went back to the Condo while Shawn joined Mark, Mike and Jane to ski.

The next morning, Shawn woke up and went for a run to Grizzly Outfitters to pick up a couple of lift tickets. Mark and Mike skied at Big Sky, while the rest of us went back to Moonlight Basin. Again we pushed the kids around for a while. Esther the trooper when to ski school (where she earned her stopping sticker). This time Cade met his instructor, but again it was just too much for him. I don't think he wanted his parents to leave. The instructor assigned to him was way type A and loud which may have helped push him into his shell too. Anyway, he DID NOT want to ski, and DID NOT want to go to class. We knew there was a sledding hill nearby so we thought we'd try that. Shawn, Cade and I walked to the hill, but there were no sleds. So Shawn walked back to Madison to see about a sled, while Cade and I traipsed around the ski hill. Once Shawn returned we learned that sledding hill was closed. (Bad timing there) So we again made the best of it and had lunch at the base area (and the adults had a beer). It didn't take long and Esther's class was over and Jane was ready too. So we drove back to the Condo. Once there Shawn and I agreed to try cross country skiing at a nearby place called Lone Mountain ranch. Jane agreed to watch the bambinos. So Shawn and I again headed to......Grizzly Outfitters for x country skis. Once equipt, we drove the 2 miles to the ranch, paid our access fees and were off. I gave Shawn my Rod Hammer (my elementary Phy Ed teacher) 2 minute technique lesson and we were off. Shawn picked it up really fast and we both enjoyed it tremendously (even the EXPERT hill we descended). Shawn then went back with Jane that same evening for another run around - - so we all got a bit of exercise in.

The next morning Mark and Mike left early, leaving only the parents and the 4 and 5 year olds. This morning Cade went to Mountain Kids camp, while the adults and Esther skied in the AM. Esther, that super trooper 5 year old skied down with the adults. It was pretty cool. I have to say that I was TREMENDOUSLY (I can't capitalize that more) nervous about downhill skiing. I'd not had much experience at this and I had boat loads of anxiety. Once at Madison Base area, Shawn and I left Jane and Esther and headed up the Six Shooter lift. By the time we got down to the lift I was beginning to really enjoy this downhill ski thing. It was fun. I was able to snowplow as well as move from side to side and stop hockey style. It was really fun! Shawn and I did a couple of runs and then hit the restaurant to eat and have a beer. I don't think Shawn enjoyed it as much as I did.

The following day Cade and Esther went to Moonlight Kids (which they both enjoyed. Jane and I skied in the AM while Shawn choose to workout at the Lodge. This time skiing I felt like I got better with each run. To be fair the first run felt treacherous as there were icy parts and then lots of powder - - which made for quite a contrast. At noon-ish Jane got Esther for a ski lesson and Shawn and Cade swam in the outdoor pool (and Hot TUB!) I made a few more and different runs and continued to enjoy this downhill thing more and more.

The final day in Montana Jane and Esther skied, Shawn and Cade swam and I sat in the lodge and read a book in the morning sunshine. In the afternoon the kids went to Moonlight Kids and the adults decided to explore Big Sky Resort.

All in all this ended up being a good vacation - - although I'm sure our next one will be to somewhere warm. The people of the Big Sky area and employees of Moonlight Basin were just such cool laid back people. There was always a friendly genuine hello and often conversation. It struck me immediately on Monday morning when I returned to work where the norm is to listen to head phones on the way in, not make eye contact in the elevator or on any of the floors or hallways. Totally Unfun.

Here’s the score on what we rented from the good fellas at Grizzly Outfitters:

5 pairs of downhill skis
5 pairs of downhill ski poles
5 pair of downhill ski boots
2 pair snowshoes
2 pair snowshoe poles
2 pair cross country skis
2 pair cross country poles
2 pair cross country boots

I feel bad. It's been a long time.

Back running a bit after rolling my ankle badly this fall. Starting to think about 2009. The lady and I would both really like to do a half ironman provided we can race the whole time. Were contemplating it anyway.

For now here's this. A year old video of Cade riding his bike. I like it anyway.
This year we signed up for a CSA with Rock Spring Farm. We've really liked it although we've definitely not known what to do with the herbs.

Last week, amongst various root plants and leafy greens we had a zucchini! I'd guess if poled 85% of the populations first though upon hearing the word "zucchini" is something related to zucchini bread. As a kid I always loved zucchini bread and the other variations banana bread etc. However, I am now allergic to bananas and nuts which makes banana bread a huge allergic bomb.

However I still have zucchini bread!

I talked to Cade about it and he was in. The lil' guy loves to cook and especially loves it if the cooking/baking/roasting involves tools, fire and stirring. This was right up his alley. After assembling the ingredients and being pretty much ready to go, Cade and I went at grating the zucchini. It only took a minute and I could smell the cool, crisp fragrance of zucchini. I continued to grate and the semi transparent gratings were lying on the plate with a pool of zucchini juices.....

Wait. This is NOT a zucchini. This was a cucumber. Now, honestly, I'm not stupid. I knew looking at this thing that it was a cucumber. But for some reason I had it in my head that it was a zucchini and that was that.

I knew that the lil guys heart would be broken if we didn't continue with the recipe. I KNEW that if we didn't include the ingredient we'd be grating for the last few minutes he'd confused and heartbroken. So, we carried on. I did pose the question that perhaps we should call it something different, but Cade overruled. What do I care if our zucchini bread has no zucchini, but has 2 cups of grated cucumber?

That is the story of how we made Zucchini Bread! And as a public service, here they are below: The zucchini and the cucumber.

Cucumber!

I love it when a plan comes together. This morning Shawn forwarded me a workout and this link to help me determine my paces. I put in a HUGE stretch goal and it resulted in this pace chart:

Equivalent race paces:

So I tried to do my workout with these paces. Making my plan look like:

1 mile warmup (at 10 min miles)

2 X 200's @ 6:22 min miles
1 X 400 @ 6:10 min miles
1 X 800 @ 5:22 min miles
1 X 400 @ 6:10 min miles
2 X 200's @ 6:22 min miles

1 mile cool down (starting at 10 min mile)

The 800 got a little speedy for me and with my first 400 done I slowed down to 5:5X. Otherwise I did this workout and at the end the 6:22 pace and 6:10 pace seemed slow! Again, I was sweating up a storm on the treadmill.

The only bummer of this workout is that I wore my new glasses, and they just don't stay up (anyone ever see that Steve Martin movie, "the jerk"? Anyway, so while I'm making my legs move just as fast as I can, my glasses are bouncing off my face. Had to have been a funny image for anyone else in the gym.

This Sunday we had a couple of kids Cades age over for a birthday thing, he had a great time and was a good guy. Kate, Bjorn, Eleanor and Erik gave him a trumpet that he's fallen in love with, see the picture.

This year I stood in the starting chute, not all that excited about being there. Thursday evening Cade came down with a terrible Flu which continued into Friday. Shawn decided that she'd stay back and I waivered on what to do. I couldnt decide if I should skip the event, which wouldn't have been all that bad considering my training, or if I should carry on and run it. In the end, I decided to head up and do it. Cade seemed better on Friday, but neither Shawn or I wanted to risk getting Grandma Corrigan sick or bring Cade to Duluth and putting the Smith kids at risk. So.... at 3:00 or so, I loaded myself into the Subie and north. Kyle and Kim were able to pick up my number at the expo which was HUGE. The off ramp on 35 to get to the expo was nearly a mile back on 35. Crazy.

After watching Will's T-Ball Game, and eating spaghetti at Bulldog. Kyle and I went to get his haircut. While I was sitting waiting for his doo to be done, my phone rang. I answered to sobs, snorts, and cries of, "Daddy..... I want you to come home.....NOW" and then I'm pretty sure he threw up. It was 7:30. Shawn and Cade called me one more time that night and again, Cade got sick. I found out after I got home on Saturday that he was sick every 30-60 minutes all night Friday. Shawn had her own vomit marathon.

After hanging with the Smiths for few minutes Friday night, we all went to bed. I woke at 4:40 to hop in the shower, get changed and drive the 5 minutes to UMD. Grandmas does a great job of bussing people to the start of the race. I got my seat on the bus and went into a psuedo sleep/day dream state. This made the trip to the race start short.

At the race start I went through my usual routine, use the porta johns, stretch, drink some gatorade, eat a clif bar, stretch, use the porta john, check my bags and make my way to the starting line. I was really really pleased to see a 4:15 pace group. I had thought of running with either the 4:00 or 4:30 pacer and had a hard time deciding. My decision was made for me with the 4:15 pacer. I started off okay staying with this group. At mile 3 or so, nature called so I pulled over to get to know nature better. I had gotten ahead of the 4:15 group a bit, so they caught up and passed me here. It took another mile and I caught them again and hung with them a bit longer. I felt pretty crappy quickly, and resorted to walk/running. I don't recall feeling this bad this early in a race, and I considered dropping out, but at the half way mark, I just kept going with the thought of, well, I've made it this far, I might as well finish.

Most of the run was unremarkable. The aid stations were great and to be honest, despite how crappy I felt the run went pretty quickly. At about mile 19 or so, I noticed I was leap frogging with this younger gal in a Loyola shirt. She would jog along slowly, looking tired but keeping steady. People along the course would shout, "Go Loyola!" and she'd pump her fist in response. Anyway, so she'd pass me when I'd walk, and I'd pass her when I ran. At about mile 23, I'd had enough, and this was good, as it gave me something to fight for. So I made it my mission ton not let the fist pumping loyola t-shirt chick beat me. I dropped my arms down and ran. I turned around with about a mile to go and she was gone, I couldn't see her behind me. I kept up the pace just to be sure and crossed the finish in 4:42:something.

All in all it was an okay run considering I haven't really done much specific training for this marathon. Next up is Lifetime Fitness Triathlon and the Twin Cities Marathon. I swear I'm gonna traing for the TC and I will break 4 hours.
It was awesome. For a free event they really did it up. By merely signing up, the kids got t-shirts, goldFISH crackers, swedish FISH candy as well as access to do a cool art project with fish on top of the fishing itself.

They gave Cade a lil mini Barbie rod and reel which was actually very nice (for what it was) and Eliot got a real deal fishing rod. On the dock they had a large rubbermaid container with all kinds of fish that had already been caught, and lots of bait - - worms and corn. Cade caught a nice bluegill right away with a piece of corn, but he didn't catch much more. Eliot wasn't catching anything, so I decided to lower his bait in the water and BAM! he caught fish after fish after fish.

I think we all had a great time.
Okay, I'll cover a few recent events here including:
Cade Fishing!
TC Marathon
Recent Run with CadesMom
IsaGenix Cleanse

Cade Fishing
The lil' big guy loves fishing. At the cabin the big excitment, can't contain yourself excitment was to fish. I had purchased two kids superman fishing rods at target; one for Cade one for his friend Esther. Once we arrived at the cabin, "when can I fish?", "When can I fish?", "When can I fish?".

So I put a bobber on each of the lines and tied on a casting weight at the bottom - - much much much safer than a 4 year old and 3 year old with hooks at the end of the line. Once in their hot little hands the kids fished off all the docs, in puddles, in sitting water inside boats, you name it they tried to catch fish.

Soon the fun had to end and we left the cabin. The fishing rods were kept in the roof cargo carrier which greatly disappointed Cade. Once we arrived home we carried all the gear and the cargo carrier itself in the house. As I carried the cumbersome carrier to the basement, this is what I found in the kitchen:

That is the dogs water bowl.

TC Marathon
We'll it was hot, but to be honest, I didn't think it was any worse than the last two Grandmas. 2007 and 2006 Grandmas were brutal. I arrived with my lady at the dome with plenty of time to stand in line for the port-a-potty. After stretching for the first time this year, I decided to unpin my race number from my shirt to my shorts. It was feeling warm and I've learned that if I overheat early in a run, I have a difficult time recovering. The Lady and I walked together to get me to the start and she photo documented all of it. As I made my way to the chute and she walked on the sidewalk it became clear it was going to be nearly impossible to move forward and try to run with the 4:15 pacer. So, I hopped out of the chute and went along side. After the first heat started, I hopped back in the chute with a couple of friends my Lady knows. Then Bam! We're off. It took two blocks and my shirt was off. Better for me, but the pictures tell, not so sweet for those watching the marathon. The 4:15 pacer chick took off. I stayed with her, but not glued to her as some folks are through the first 3-4 miles. She ran right through the first water stop which I did not as I felt hot and thought it was important to get some water. I didn't lollygag though and I caught up without any effort. It was right about mile 2 that Alan Page was playing tuba! Not everyday you see that! At the second aid station I grabbed my water and carried on (I think this was at Lake Calhoun) but I completely lost the 4:15 pacer. I didn't see her in front or behind. Crap! Oh well I didn't really think I could keep it up the way I felt so I just carried on. I noted that my mile times were 9:15 ish with a couple of sub 9's so I was pretty happy with that. I saw Bruce my co-worker, Jane and Esther, and Laura (who made a fantastic sign)! I knew that my lady and cade would be at mile 10 (the Tarrymore Turn) so I was looking forward to them. There was quite a turnout there as CadesMom, Cade, CadesAunt, CadesCousin, and CadesMomsFriend were all there. Jill's husband Ken was running as well so she was cheering on him. I was feeling pretty good at this point. At about mile 13-14 it started to unravel. I arrived half way at just about 2 hours. I was suprised as I had been at the 10k mark as well. I was going a bit faster than I had wanted, but I thought geez that 4:15 is still way in front of me. I reached Minnehaha falls and saw my nephew Michael handing out water at the aid station. It was here that I really died. I didn't feel too bad as it seemed like everyone around me was dieing too. More than anything I felt bad for my family who would be waiting for me at the finish. I did see Steve in a Speedo several times which was a real boost. Hard not to smile. Check out his site and you'll see what I mean.

Through the walk-run death march I ended up surviving pretty well. Somehow my time was better than average (a first for me)! Here's the results:

Recent Run with CadesMom
Saturday Morning and Sunday Morning this week we had a CadeSitter, Fiona. So we were able to go for a couple of runs. We ran to the park building at Nokomis on Saturday. I had a hard time breathing going out, but coming back felt pretty good. It was a nice run and I was able to stay with CadesMom (although I don't think she was pushing or anything).

On Sunday, she and I took the dogs to the river dog park where they had a B-L-A-S-T. We dropped them off and went for a trot to Lake Harriet and around. We made pretty good time and stopped for Coffee on the way back. What a great way to spend a morning. I love this running thing especially with Cade and especially when I am working hard and stretching my abilities.

New Goal for Tulsa Route 66 is to run with my Lady.

IsaGenix
Robbie, my sister in law has had great success with IsaGenix. The gal and I have been drinking the shakes. Saturday I started the IsaGenix IsaClense program. This is a detox and fat burning program, so I measured my body with the aid of the lovely Shawn, and drank the drinks. We'll see how it goes. So far it hasn't been bad. Saturday and Sunday were "pre-clense" days where I eat one "sensible" meal, drink two shakes and swallow a supplemental pill. Today (Monday), is the first day of the program. Today I drink, 4 4-oz servings of a fruit mixture and I can have several "snacks" which look to be wafers. Unfortunately I forgot to bring any to work today so I'll be drinking lots of water and nothing else. We'll see how the program goes and I'll report back. I'll either do the 9 day or 30 day program. Not sure which yet.

Well hello there. It has been a long time hasn't it? How are you? I see your doing well, looking great. Well done.

What have we been up to since the great blog meltdown of 07? Well lets see... we have:
Moved to a new house
Finished a couple of tri's (Lifetime, Brewhouse) and a marathon (Grandmas)
Given up Paci's
Pooped on the toilet! (hurrah!)
Pooped on the balcony (boo)
Drank too much coffee
Watched lots of road construction
Trained for another marathon
...and perhaps another
...and perhaps another
Trying to plan vacation
Turned 3
Turned 37
Turned 34
Turned around several times
Road Tractors
Road bikes

You get the idea.

So, now the next big event is the TC Marathon, sorry MTC Marathon. Training hasn't gone the way I 'd hoped after a pretty decent Grandmas. But what can you do? I'm chalking it up to allergies and a case of not getting GREAT sleep. But whatever, maybe MTCM will suprise me.

Gotta go. Hope to keep this better up to date!
Yesterday, Cadesdad, CadesMom and Cade hopped in the car and were off running CadeErrands. As we started on out journey, CadesDad decided to share the legend of the Paci (pacifier, nuk etc) Fairy with Cade.

"Cade", Cadesdad said, "there are lots of babies in the world who don't have any paci's and desperately need them. I happen to know that the paci fairy has a keen eye on your stockpile of pacis. I also know that if you leave your paci's under your pillow at night the paci fairy will leave you a big suprise. Maybe a big truck.....Would you like a big truck?"

"Yes!"

Silence

And then, "No. I don't want a big truck."

Cadesdad replied, "Well, I happen to know that the Paci Fairy has a pretty big inventory and you could probably ask Mom and Dad to lobby to the Paci Fairy to get something you'd really like in exchange for the your paci stock."

Silence.

And then, "When I grow up, I'm going to be a Paci Fairy."
